Author's Note: Sometimes it takes a while to notice the obvious.

He kisses Yamato because he wants to, because he loves him, and can't help himself. He keeps apologizing, he's so sorry, he should have noticed before and said something, anything, but he's always been stupid and what was Yamato doing, trying to be discreet? Discretion has never worked with him and probably never will; that's Yamato's area of expertise and he’s too good at keeping himself locked away. Yamato has looked vulnerable for days but still had that biting sarcasm and he’d been so very afraid, but it didn’t matter anymore. “I've always loved you, Taichi,” Yamato whispers, and as easily as that, he’s forgiven.

your voice resonates
somehow I feel warmed by the tone
I want to hear you forever

will this unfold like the petals of the rose
protected by thorns and hidden by leaves
until revealed by that which it hides from

do I dare ask how we got this far?
how I feel lost without your touch?
how I long to feel you next to me?

the world slows and babies learn to dream
the heart of the world beats and resounds in my ears
while the warmth of your arms keeps me safe

I thought I'd never see an end to the misery
that all my life was worth nothing to no one
that all I was, all I felt, meant nothing

to feel a sweet embrace of emotions
that was the one thing I've wanted all along
and now I know, no embrace has been sweeter than yours

Je t'aime, mon chéri.

"My Greatest Moment"
by Yamato Ishida

It just feels like sometimes there really isn’t anything you can do. Friends fall apart under pressure. That’s just how life works. I just never expected him to be the one that needed support, or that I would be the one supporting him. And then that our roles would reverse themselves… But then I suppose I am getting ahead of myself. I apologise; I get easily distracted.

This is supposed to be a story about the greatest moment I ever experienced. I personally think that such a story can never truly be written, for how can you ever tell a true story in the one way that gives it justice? You can’t, or at least I can’t. But I don’t want to fail this class, so I guess I’ll have to try.

Did I mention that I’m easily distracted?

Already know what you'll say
I ask for truth but you lie anyway

Even when I'm smart I'm stupid for you

I'm dumb because I forgive you
I'm sad because I stay
I've become predictable—
You already know what I won't do

Because even when I'm smart I'm stupid for you
And you get away with everything...

"Hey, Yamato."

"Yeah?"

"Want to fuck?"

Yamato choked on his drink. "Did I hear you right?" Taichi grinned. "Why?"

"Something to do."

Yamato raised an eyebrow. "Is that all I am to you? 'Something to do'?"

The brunette pretended to think about it. Yamato swatted him. "I'm kidding!" Taichi protested, ducking. "But seriously," he added, "you're hot and not an asshole. What do I have to say to get you into bed?"

The blonde shrugged. "I don't think I'd ever sleep with you, Tai, regardless of what you said."

"Why?"

"You're my best friend."

"So? Best friends sleep together all the time."

"Only in soaps and porno films."

"Are you're saying that they don't depict real, historical events? That they aren't true?" Taichi gasped in mock horror, and Yamato couldn't help but laugh.

"You're crazy."

"And your point is...?"

"Give it up."

"That's what I'm saying," Taichi leered before laughing at the look Yamato gave him. "Okay, okay," he chuckled, picking up his own drink. "Let's make a toast." Yamato raised his own glass, and the brunette clicked his against it. "To you getting drunk."

"Tai, I'm not going to have sex with you," Yamato groaned.

"Fine, fine," Taichi grinned, "but let me know if you ever change your mind."

"That won't happen."

"Stop ruining my dreams and hurry up with the drinking."

Yamato shook his head and raised the bourbon to his lips, emptying the glass. Sometimes drinking with Tai was weird like this, but his friend had never done more than hit on him, so he'd learnt to deal with it. Besides, it wasn't like Tai was ugly. "Plastered it is," he said, holding out the glass to Taichi for a refill.

His best friend grinned and emptied the rest of the bottle into it. "Good thing we have more, huh?"

Yamato made a non-committal noise. 'Tonight will certainly be an interesting night,' he thought, and smiled.

[livejournal.com profile] anime100 challenge for 08/26/04 to 09/02/04: Breaking Rules

The wall was cold against Taichi’s back but his best friend’s lips, pressed suddenly against his own, were burning hot. Taichi was drowning in feeling, burning with confused desire. He’d always wanted this to happen, but now that it had... Yamato’s unexpected kiss was blurring the lines between truth and lies, between fact and fiction, between love and hate, and he was lost. Yamato kissing another guy – not just anyone, but him, Yamato’s best friend – broke every rule that society had laid upon them, upon everyone, and Taichi was lost. "Fuck the rules," he thought defiantly, and kissed Yamato back.

Ken hated being alone sometimes. There was no way for him to escape his thoughts, his emotions... He hated feeling, but he hated thinking most of all.

It was no wonder sometimes that Daisuke worried about him. There were days where he did his best to push him away but he always failed at that. Daisuke knew when there was something wrong and always pushed to find out what it was.

He loved and hated it, but he couldn't hate Daisuke. He would never be able to stop loving him.

It scared him sometimes—not that he would ever admit that, especially to Daisuke himself—because he never knew what to do to make things right. Lying in Daisuke's arms gave him the best feeling, but he just felt so worried that one day it would all change, that Daisuke would leave him. When he was with Daisuke he felt almost complete; the things he'd done as the Digimon Kaiser just faded away... but when he was alone it would all come back to him. It haunted both his waking thoughts and his dreams.

The dreams were the worst part. Only Daisuke could make the memories of them fade.

He both loved and hated it, but he could never hate Daisuke.

The first thing Ken became aware of was the warmth, and he shifted into it automatically before realising that he wasn't alone. There was someone behind him, their arm tight across his waist under the blankets. Opening his eyes he lifted a corner and peered at it. He wasn't completely sure who it was exactly, but at least it looked familiar.

"Put that damn blanket back down; you're letting the heat out." Despite how sleepy he sounded, Daisuke also sounded slightly irritated, so Ken obediently lowered the corner.

"Does it bother you that Sora's with Tai instead of you?"

The question was entirely unexpected; Yamato blinked uncertainly. "Come on, Tai's my best friend and he knows how I feel. Besides, I completely trust Sora. I'm not worried at all, Izzy."

It was hard work keeping up appearances—pretending that he liked Sora was hard—but Yamato was good at hiding how he really felt. No one had gotten past his mask in a long time except for TK, and that had been for a very good reason. They were brothers after all.
To think that no one knew his secret except TK...

He realized abruptly that Izzy was talking again. "I'm sorry, what did you say?"

The redhead frowned. "I said, are you sure you're alright? It's just that you've been rather reserved lately, and I was just offering a listening ear in case you required one."

"Thanks Izzy, but I'm really okay." Yamato crossed his arms over his chest in irritation but managed to smile. "I don't need to talk to anyone."

He could have sworn Izzy muttered, "That's what you think," under his breath as he left, but he wasn't sure.

Was the genius right? He should probably tell someone the real reason that he was worried about the budding relationship between Sora and Taichi, but he'd never really opened up to anyone in his life. Maybe...?

Yamato shook his head and started walking, ducking into the nearby forest and down the narrow path to the lake. He needed to think about his real feelings for Taichi, really think, and didn't want to be interrupted.

The haunting melody of his harmonica echoed through the night as the moon shone down on the other children sitting around the campfire, light from the flames dancing across their tired faces and shining in their eyes.

Taichi closed his eyes and listened. Yamato was a confusing guy, but he played a mean harmonica and the brunette wasn't one to complain about a free show, even if the music was a little sad.

He made up his mind that he would talk to Yamato when he returned from wherever it was that he was hiding now. He couldn't run from himself forever; Taichi would open him up and hear his secrets if it was the last thing he did.

Quoted from the script:

Yamato: Enough. Why don't you stop and think about other people's feelings for a change?
Tai: Huh? What are you talking about?
Yamato: We all know you're right, Tai, but just give us a little space.
Tai: Wha?
Yamato: We miss our friends who fought along side of us. Not everyone has ice running through their veins like you do.
Tai: Wha?
Yamato: You're so busy looking forward, that you never take time to look back. We've lost some good friends here, Tai, and it's nice to remember them once in awhile.
Tai: If we always stop to do that, we'll never have enough time to save the world.
Yamato: You still don't get it. I know you hear me, but you're not listening.

"Hey, it's getting pretty dark in these woods," Daisuke said loudly, trying to force himself to sound brave and courageous. "Here, 'Kari, I'll hold your hand so you won't get scared." He laced his fingers through the others, squeezing it briefly to give her hope and distract her from the dark.

"I'm not scared," Hikari said in return.

"And it's not her hand... it's mine."

Takeru's voice was soft in the twilight, and Daisuke blushed. "Oh." Even with this new information, the hand in his was soft and warm, regardless of whose it was, so he didn't let go.

Takeru frowned slightly and Hikari took the hint, moving ahead of them on the path. When she was gone, the blonde murmured, "Aren't you supposed to let go really quickly and make embarrassed noises when you grab the wrong hand?"

"But I like holding your hand," Daisuke said thoughtlessly, then mentally kicked himself as he realised what his friend might think.

Takeru fell silent, but the tension level increased dramatically and he kept looking sideways at the brunette as they followed Hikari up the path. She was already a few metres in front and seemed determined to keep that way.

"I think she's noticed that you're tense," Daisuke said to Takeru quietly.

Takeru raised his eyebrows. "I'm not tense. I'm just not used to other boys wanting to hold my hand."

"Well, fine, whatever. I was just trying to... Never mind." Daisuke abruptly let go of Takeru and stuffed his hands in his pockets. It was cold without his friend's hand in his.

"I don't mind. Really, I don't. It's just... odd."

Takeru sounded so uncertain that the brunette stopped walking and just looked at him. There was a blush on his face that Daisuke couldn't see in the now-dark forest. "Let's just catch up to 'Kari," Daisuke said softly, and the two boys started walking again.

Neither one slept well that night, each plagued by thoughts of the other that just wouldn't fade.

"You can't do this. You're just a kid like me!" I really hadn't expected that, but the edge of the cliff had been closer than I expected and the bastard had just walked up and pushed me...

"No, I'm not just like you. If I was, I would be the one hanging off the cliff." The Kaiser looked at me with such contempt in his eyes that I would have just run off to go hide under a rock somewhere if I hadn't been hanging on to my life with my fingertips.

He bent down and grabbed the front of my shirt to haul me up towards him; my grip on the edge of the cliff lost, I lifted my feet onto the edge and clutched his wrists. One eye narrowed at me as I touched him, but I didn't let go. "What you don't seem to understand, you and those other Chosen Children..." he spat out the words as if they were a bad taste in his mouth, "...is that I am unstoppable. I have everything ready and at my disposal; my army is complete and awaiting my command. What makes you think you can stop me?"

He'd voiced everything I worried about aloud with that contemptible look on his face, and something inside me balked at his tone. "We're fighting you because we have to! Because of you, digimon could die."

He smirked. "You misheard me, brat. Why are you fighting me?" His eyes flashed with something I couldn't exactly name, but really didn't like. "Why don't you just give in to me?" I didn't know what to say. What was wrong with this guy? Why wasn't he trying to kill me already?

"Where's that fire in your eyes gone?" he hissed at me, tightening his hands in my shirt. "You look so lost. But when you talk about saving the world, they burn..." He lifted me slightly off the ground and stared into my eyes as if looking for that 'fire' I supposedly had. He'd gotten so close that I could feel his breath on my face, but before I could raise a fist to punch him he'd lowered me again. "You interest me. I don't think I'll dispose of you, yet." He stepped backwards even as he threw me sideways to the ground, looking almost casual about it. Damn, this guy was stronger than he looked. I'd have to remember that. "Guards!"

The digimon looked mean and I backed away a bit, stopping before I could get too close to the edge of the cliff. I wasn't going near that again. "What do you mean, I 'interest' you?" I asked, confused.

He just smirked at me, and I didn't like the look in his eyes. "Oh, you shall find out." Two of the digimon picked me up, one arm each, and started carrying me away.

I couldn't resist yelling back to him, "Yeah, well... Your hairstyle sucks!" God, lame. I need to work on my comebacks.

I looked over at Yamato sitting on the edge of my bed, muscles tense, eyes fully focused on my face. "I never asked you to tell me anything like this."

"I know."

"I don't know what you want me to say."

"I know."

We gazed at each other for a long time, neither of us certain of how to react. When Yamato told me that we had to talk, I had shrugged and agreed. There was no way that I had been ready for this. He had dragged me into my room and sat me down and stalled and stalled and stalled until I made him tell me what was on his mind.

It blew me away.

"Taichi."

I closed my eyes. I didn't want to look at him, see the irritation and hurt slowly rising up in his eyes. He wanted an answer and he wanted one now, but I've been his best friend for a long time and even so, I don't know if I can deal with this.

I don't know what to do.

I don't even know whether I love him back. I've never really thought too hard about it; I've always done my best to keep Yamato out of my personal fantasies. It just seemed wrong somehow, like I'd be using him, so he'd always been off-limits.
He's not now. He's telling me he's not.

I feel warmth on my face and realise that he's stroking my cheek, softly, gently, with one hand. "I just want..." he says and stops, as if the thought had been too secret and personal to share, but his comment makes me blush as my mind fills in the blanks.

Oh God, what would my parents say?

He snatches his hand away as if he was scared of me, and I open my eyes. He's looking at me again, eyes dark as he runs the tip of his tongue along the outside of his lips, and I can't look away.

I want him so bad—this sexy guy is virtually posing for me on my bed—but at the same time I hate him for doing this to me. He knows I'm open-minded; indeed, perhaps the only reason he approached me at all was because he knows that I'm bisexual.

He just told me he loves me, but what do you do when you don't want to risk losing your best friend?
